The Retreat offers glamping next to world class beaches with five pristine beachfront rooms and an exclusive elevated penthouse.

This exclusive resort accommodates only 12 guests at a time with an elevated restaurant, bar and pool overlooking the western bay, which offers stunning views of the Arafura Sea. All meals are prepared by a qualified chef who serves unforgettable dining experiences.

The traditional owners have given Helen and Trevor permission to operate Banubanu Beach Retreat on Bremer Island and a permit fee from all guests visiting the retreat is paid to the traditional owners.

The name Banubanu was given to the large rocky outcrops at Banubanu Beach Retreat by Maccassan traders well before European colonisation. Banu is a Persian name for a woman whereby Banubanu would mean women, which these large boulders represent.

Committed to sustainable living, Banubanu is an eco- friendly retreat and runs 100% on solar power and the main water supply is bore water with an ethos on water-wise usage.

Dining

Banubanu’s Seabreeze Restaurant, Bar, Lounge and Pool is an elevated Pavilion overlooking the azure blue waters of our Western Cove. From here you will not want to leave our endless deck or pool enjoying a heavenly sunset before indulging in innovative high-quality cuisine prepared by our onsite chef. The deck is also the perfect place to sit, relax and soak up the atmosphere of Arnhem Land.

Produce and Quality Wines

All meals are prepared by the resort’s in-house chef, whom uses the freshest produce. Our herbs are grown at the resort, our seafood is sourced locally, such as wild caught barramundi. Our meal’s signature condiments are sourced from across Australia.

Catch of the Day

Any catches from the day’s offshore or crabbing activities are also freshly prepared and served, often only hours after being caught.

Nomad Fishing Tours

Fishing around Bremer Island near Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory’s Arnhem Land is beyond breathtaking! Migrating Pelagic like Spanish Mackerel and Tuna abound in the waters where the Gulf of Carpentaria meets the Arafura Sea.  The many local reefs are also home to Trevally, Queenfish and scores of other tropical reef species including those fabulous table fish such as Red Emperor, Jewfish and Coral Trout.

Bremer Island Cruises

operates from Gove Harbour and was established to cater for the developing tourism in East Arnhem Land. Working in collaboration with Banubanu Beach Retreat, Bremer Island Cruises identified the need to provide a high-speed tour boat that can carry 20 passengers to service much sought after Day Tours and for any other charter work that is required from the Gove Harbour.

A fast boat ride will take you to the beautiful Banubanu Beach Retreat on Bremer Island. Meals and drinks can be purchased from the “Sea Breeze Restaurant and Pool Bar” at Banubanu.

A perfect day for families and spirited travellers, and those that have an interest in a real Top End experience. Departure and Arrival times from the Gove Harbour may vary to suit the tides, we will send you notification 24 hours before your departure.

Cultural Experiences

“Welcome to Country” Day Tour of the Nhulunbuy Region and Buku-Larrngay Art Centre with a Yolngu Guide. This tour is with Lirrwi Tourism, we can book your tour before your arrival at Banubanu. $350 p/p *Minimum requirement of 4 people per tour.

Beach, Rock or Fly Fishing

Enjoy some beach/rock fishing (BYO tackle – bait is for sale). Bremer Island is the perfect location for some fantastic fly fishing.

Bird Watching

Bremer Island has 65 identified birds on the island for the twitchers. Most of the smaller uninhabited islands seen from Bremer Island are listed important bird areas in Arnhem Land and are home to large populations of sea birds which feed off the bounty of these fish rich waters.

Turtle Nesting

Guests may come across turtles nesting upon our beaches if the opportunity arises during their stay at Banubanu. Of the six species in the world, four of these lay their eggs on our beaches.

Walking Trails

Banubanu has four marked out walking trails ranging from 1.2 kilometres to 5 kilometres long for the walking enthusiasts to enjoy during the cool of the day.

Marine Debris Conservation

Get involved in some beach conservation by helping us keep our beaches clean from plastic flotsam and jetsam that comes across from other countries.

Scenic Flights

We highly recommend guests book a scenic flight while transferring or during their stay at Bremer Island. This entails either a local light aircraft or helicopter charter. It gives guests the opportunity to view the pristine beauty of the remote East Arnhem Land region.

Cancellation Policy

Notice of cancellation must be received in writing to Banubanu Beach Retreat.

Cancellations within two months of arrival 50% of total paid will be refunded. Within one month prior to arrival all monies will be forfeited.

No refunds can be given in the event of non-arrival, any unused services or unused nights due to flight and/or weather disruption.

Change of travel date dates can be amended for no charge.

100% credit can be applied to any future booking.

We recommend you protect yourself with travel insurance.

Covid-19 Peace of Mind

Guests at Banubanu travel with confidence, knowing full flexibility is offered for change of plans due to Covid-19-related health matters or travel restrictions. Refunds or credits will be offered for any necessary cancellations or date for stays up until March 31, 2022.

Whilst government regulations are still evolving, it’s possible we can only be permitted to welcome guests who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. To avoid any potential disappointment, we strongly recommend that you schedule your vaccinations and have had your second shot at least 14 days before travelling to Bremer Island.

In the event that you are unable to travel due non-compliance with Health Orders in effect at the time, it’s important to note our flexible cancellation policy would not apply and cancellations within one month of arrival will be subject to a full deposit forfeiture.

Conditions

All rates are quoted in Australian Dollars and inclusive of GST (Goods and Services Tax).

Banubanu reserves the right to alter the itinerary due to unforeseen circumstances or cultural reasons.

Banubanu accepts no responsibility for any loss of property or damage to property.

Banubanu will not be held accountable for any personal injury or illness to the client during the course of your stay at Banubanu Beach Retreat.

Banubanu recommends that all clients take out adequate travellers’ insurance to cover:

  • Costs arising from their cancellation of a booking due to unforeseen circumstances
  • Loss and damage to property.
  • Personal injury and illness.

By booking the program you are acknowledging that you understand and agree to these conditions.

Child Policy
For children 6 to 12 years deduct $100 per child per 24-hour period. Children 13 years and over full price.

Bremer Island is located in North East Arnhem Land Northern Territory. Nhulunbuy being the nearest town with the Gove airport being our closest airport, 15 kilometres away. Check Airnorth for flights and bookings.

Flights

Light Aircraft Plane Transfers from Gove to Bremer Island

A 15-minute flight in a light aircraft from Gove Airport to the Bremer Island airstrip. This scenic flight gives you an aerial view of Bremer Island and the beautiful Arafura Sea. There are weight and volume restrictions on baggage on these flights. Each person is allowed a maximum of 15kg.

Self-Drive into Arnhem Land

The Central Arnhem Highway is situated 50 kilometres south of Katherine on the Stuart Highway, Northern Territory. The distance from Katherine to Nhulunbuy is 710 kilometres.

Make your own way to Bremer Island

Do you have your own boat or plane? Then why not make your own way to Banubanu. Guests with their own boats are welcome to arrive at either of our beaches under their own steam (or sail). Guests with their own light aircraft can land on the Gutjangan Community airstrip on Bremer Island. Guests with their own helicopter can land safely close to the retreat with prior notice.
