TranzAlpine Train

Christchurch

, New Zealand

Ride from the plains of Canterbury through the heart of the Southern Alps to the West Coast aboard the TranzAlpine. A gently powerful way to connect with New Zealand’s wild heart.

Overview

The TranzAlpine is often regarded as one of the world’s great scenic rail journeys, weaving a route from Christchurch across 223 kilometres of spectacular terrain to Greymouth. The train traverses the lowlands of the Canterbury Plains, climbs into the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass, then descends through lush west coast rainforest before emerging at Lake Brunner and Greymouth.

The journey begins among Canterbury’s patchwork fields and continues through dramatic Waimakariri River gorges, over towering viaducts and through a dozen tunnels carved deep into the rock. Standout moments include the Staircase Viaduct soaring 73 metres above a stream and sweeping views of Lake Sarah and Mount Binser at Cass.

Onboard, modern carriages with panoramic windows bring the landscape into sharp clarity. Whether in standard seating or reserved Scenic Plus you are seated comfortably as the history, geology and engineering of this route unfold through commentary and visual aids. This is more than a rail journey; it is an experience where nature, culture and craftsmanship converge. By the time the train reaches the coast, every curve, every vista, will stay with you as part of the land’s story.

On Board Experience

Spectacular Views and Smooth Comfort
The TranzAlpine delivers an experience that centres on the scenery. Large panoramic windows and air suspended carriages mean you can lean back and take in sweeping views over vine peppered plains, thundering gorges, and snow capped mountain peaks. The ride is quiet and stable, leaving every turn of the route to surprise and delight rather than jar.

Caf Moments and Scenic Plus Dining
The café carriage offers a practical stop for hot drinks, snacks and light meals as the landscape unfolds outside. For something more thoughtful choose the Scenic Plus experience and enjoy dishes inspired by the lands you are crossing—that might mean lamb served with wine from the region or smoked salmon with local produce—all served at your seat. It brings together meal and memory in the journey itself.

Stories of Land and Line
Through headphone commentary triggered by GPS and HD screens in the carriages, the story of the journey is told in layers. You will hear about how engineers carved tunnels and built bridges through the Alps, how settlers shaped plains, and how the rivers and rocks tell a tale older than the tracks themselves. The layout of seating also invites shared discovery—whether in a cosy table group or a forward facing seat.

A Journey That Lingers
This is a route you return to in your mind. From the patchwork plains out of Christchurch into the dramatic heights of the Alpine Divide, and down into misty rainforest and river valleys, the TranzAlpine is a gentle unfolding of land, story and time. By the final stop in Greymouth you will feel connected not just to the land but to the spirit that carved the route through the heart of the Southern Alps.

You’ll have the flexibility to discover each destination at your own pace, with the confidence of having essential logistics taken care of and access to local support if needed.

Accommodation Flexibility
We understand that every traveller has different needs, so our itineraries offer flexibility in accommodation. You can choose from a range of hotels, from 3-star options to luxury 5-star properties, in most locations. If your first-choice hotel is not available at the time of booking, we will offer you an alternative of similar standard, quality, and location.

If your preferred travel dates are not available, we’ll suggest the closest alternatives or offer a full refund of your deposit.

Dynamic Pricing
Many of our accommodation providers and local suppliers use dynamic pricing models, which means prices fluctuate depending on factors such as demand, travel seasons, and availability.
Our listed “from” prices represent the lowest available rates based on low season travel with full availability. When you request a quote for your preferred travel dates, we’ll provide an accurate, up-to-date price based on availability at the time of quoting.
Prices may vary between the time we provide a quote and when you confirm your booking. Should there be any price differences, we will notify you before final confirmation and payment.

Itinerary Order & Availability
The order of your itinerary, including accommodation, tours, and transport, may be adjusted to secure the best availability and ensure a smooth travel experience. While we strive to follow the proposed itinerary as closely as possible, changes may be necessary, particularly during peak travel periods or when bookings are made close to your departure date.
For bookings made well in advance and outside of peak seasons, itinerary changes are uncommon. Any adjustments will be communicated to you in advance and are made with the aim of maintaining or improving the overall experience.
The final itinerary—including the order of your activities and accommodations—will be confirmed after your booking is secured.
